A perfect clash to begin IPL 2010 – Deccan chargers, the winners of 2009 edition vs Kolkata Knight Riders, the last in the table. In any sports, the result would have been predictable. But we are talking about Twenty-20 where 2-3 overs of brilliance can change the game. Add IPL to Twenty-20 and predictability goes for a toss. Rajasthan Royals were the weakest team in 2008 and they won that edition. Deccan Chargers were at the bottom of the table in 2008 and they won the 2009 edition. Do you still want to bet your money on the outcome of the match?

Lets see how the teams are placed.

Kolkata Knight Riders
—————————————

No Buchanan, no Fake IPL player, no concept of multiple captains. Shahrukh Khan has got everything right this time (or should I say he hasn’t attracted any controversy till date). In Dav Whatmore they have a coach who thrives with under-dogs. In Saurav Ganguly, they have arguably the best Indian captain. Last year, Brendon Mccullam led poorly from the front. And he didn’t have much support from the local cricketers. With Ganguly’s captaincy and leadership skills, rest assured, KKR will not be playing with eleven but eleven and a half players.
KKR has also got it right with new players. They brought in Owais Shah to add depth to their middle order. Angelo Mathews is a budding all-rounder from Sri Lanka and he has shown lot of promise in the International arena. Langelveldt will solve their death-over bowling. The biggest plus comes in the form of local talent, namely, Cheteshwar Pujara and Manoj Tiwary. Both the players have a lot of talent and KKR’s performance in the tournament will heavily rest on these two youngsters.

And then we have Hodge, the highest run-getter in this form of cricket. Even though most of the teams have figured out the magic of Ajantha Mendis, he is still a lethal weapon when it comes to tail-enders.

Likely team composition for Friday’s match : Ganguly, Hodge, Owais Shah, Tiwary, Pujara, Angelo Mathews, Saha (wk), Ishant, Langelveldt, Dinda/Shukla or maybe couple of new players in the form of Varun Aaron/Mandeep Singh/Iqbal Abdullah.

Deccan Chargers
———————————

They may have won the last edition but they are definitely not the favorites this year. For the first match they don’t have the option to choose the foreign players as only four are available : Gilchrist, Symonds, Gibbs and Vaas. Gilly , symmmonds and Vaas dont have much match practice. And Gibbs has been out of form for quite some time. Laxman and Rohit will bolster their middle order and RP Singh and Pragyan Ojha will be their lead bowlers. But RP’s credentials on Indian pitches cannot be rated highly. Two players who might change the game for them will be Mitchell Marsh and Kemar Roach. But sadly, for the DC, they won’t be available in the match on Friday against KKR.
Venugopal Rao is another player who would like to make a mark in this addition.

Likely Team : Gilchrist, Gibbs, Symmonds, Laxman, Rohit Sharma, V Rao, RP Singh, Pragyan Ojha, Vaas …

Prediction : Deccan chargers can win with individual performances and KKR can only do that with a team performance. Toss will be an important factor. Team batting second will definitely have an advantage. I will be betting on KKR for this match (I am big fan of Ganguly and I like to side with under-dogs :P)
